Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola

Palazzo
Farnese

100 metres from the house - 16th century

Caprarola
in an hour.

All these places can be reached on foot, right from the front door. A walk worth every second.

Palazzo Farnese

Late Renaissance - Open to visitors

One of the most important late-Renaissance monuments in Italy and Europe. Begun by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger and completed by Jacopo Barozzi, "il Vignola". Pentagonal layout, formal Italian gardens with statues and water features.

0.2 km3 min on foot

Church of Santa Teresa

Discalced Carmelites - 1620-1623

Built on the tufa cliff facing Palazzo Farnese, near an ancient medieval oratory. Erected for a community of Discalced Carmelites at the wish of Cardinal Odoardo Farnese.

0.1 km2 min on foot

Former Farnese stables

Historic centre

An imposing building 100 metres long and 20 high, built to house horses, hayloft and carriages. Up to 120 horses could be stabled there. Today it doubles as convenient free parking just steps from the house.

The historic village

16th c. - One of Italy's most beautiful villages

One of the most significant urban examples of the 16th century, with its peculiar and characteristic "Via Dritta" climbing from the foot of the village all the way up to Palazzo Farnese. To walk slowly, at the end of the day.

0.1 kmRight outside the door

The Tuscia,
within reach.

From the volcanic lake to the mannerist gardens, from villages perched on tufa to the cities of the Popes. Everything within an hour's drive.

Lake Vico
8 km - 15 min

Lake Vico

A horseshoe-shaped volcanic lake nestled among the Cimini Mountains. A nature reserve with millennia-old beech woods, looped trails and lakeside restaurants. Perfect for a slow afternoon.

19 km - 25 min

Viterbo

The "City of the Popes", with the medieval district of San Pellegrino among the best preserved in Europe. The Palace of the Popes hosted the very first conclave in history. All around, free open-air thermal baths.

52 km - 55 min

Civita di Bagnoregio

"The dying town", perched on a spur of tufa that slowly crumbles away. It can only be reached on foot, crossing a long pedestrian bridge suspended in the void. A vision out of time.

Orvieto
68 km - 1 h

Orvieto

Set on a tufa cliff, it guards the Gothic Cathedral with its famous Brizio Chapel frescoed by Luca Signorelli. St Patrick's Well, the Etruscan caves, and a glass of Orvieto Classico at sunset.

30 km - 35 min

Park of the Monsters

In Bomarzo, the "Sacred Wood" commissioned in the 16th century by Prince Vicino Orsini. Colossal, symbolic sculptures carved into peperino stone: a Mannerist labyrinth that even enchanted Salvador Dalí.

20 km - 25 min

Villa Lante

In Bagnaia, a 16th-century masterpiece of the Italian formal garden, designed by Vignola. Fountains, water features, geometric parterres and twin palace pavilions: among the best-loved historic gardens in Europe.
